Maria Sears is an artist and maker from Newcastle Upon Tyne. She has lived in Cornwall and Wales. At present Maria runs her own business making jewellery, sculpture and prints.
As an artist she takes inspiration from folk and medieval art as well as contemporary sources creating works of mystery with a strong narrative. Recurring motifs of plants and animals transport the viewer to other worlds. Maria has recently been exploring other printmaking techniques including screen printing and lithography. As a devoted maker, who loves tools and materials, she creates exciting work using everything from tissue paper to used copper water tanks.
Maria is passionate about illustration and her collection of children’s books includes such favourites as Brian Wildsmith, Martin and Alice Provenson, Maurice Sendak, and Ben Shahn. She is happy that her almost empty nest will be fuller then ever of drawings, drafts and deadlines!
