Matthew Hawkins is a graphic artist and educator based in London. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art he has developed a strong visual identity that incorporates a broad spectrum of influences and disciplines, all of which are consolidated by his passion for drawing. Working predominantly in pencil, pen and markers he constructs imagery from an unexpected combination of doodles, sketches and studies – influences include the figure in the landscape, place, beauty, architecture, cinema and the surreal. These variants are explored in a vibrant and confrontational graphic language. His work has been exhibited internationally and featured in numerous publications including Creative Review, It’s Nice That, Grafik Magazine, Varoom Magazine, Dazed & Confused and This is a Magazine. Matthew has 20 years teaching experience and has been working at Camberwell College of Arts since 2007. He is a year leader and senior lecturer across the illustration programme.
