EXPIRED: Three Exciting Opportunities as part of the Dewsbury Creative Town Arts Programme

By Jay Hulme

The Dewsbury Creative Town arts programme is currently accepting applications for three commissions – a large scale mural, a design for a separate mural which will be placed on temporary boarding in Dewsbury Arcade, and a textile public art installation

Who Can Apply?

  • Artists based in, or with strong connections to, Kirklees.
  • Applications are particularly welcomed from artists who are early in their careers or who are seeking to gain more experience of creative work in the public realm.

How does it work?

Large Scale Mural:

  • A number of locations are under consideration for an artist to develop a bespoke, contemporary design, inspired by nature, flora and fauna, and landscapes within and surrounding the town.
  • The appointed artist will develop opportunities to engage with students and residents of the local community.

Contemporary Mural Dewsbury Arcade – Design Opportunity:

  • An artist commission to create a vibrant, eye-catching contemporary mural design for boarding which is to be fitted at either end of Dewsbury Arcade, screening and protecting the building whilst stabilisation building works are in progress. The design must signal to residents the exciting transformation process which is underway and look to the future of this much-loved historic town centre building.
  • The appointed Artist must draw from engagement with the community as part of the design development process

Temporary Textiles Public Art Installation:

  • For this commission we are working in partnership with the WOVEN in Kirklees Festival.
  • The artwork will take the form of a temporary physical installation in Dewsbury town centre during the WOVEN 2021 festival (5 – 27 June).
  • Using the medium of contemporary textiles, the work will be designed to raise awareness about the climate emergency and encourage positive change.

What do you get?

  • A budget of £6000+VAT for the Large Scale Mural Opportunity
  • A budget of £6000+VAT for the Mural Design Opportunity
  • A budget of £8000+VAT for the Textile Art Opportunity
