Book of the Week: The Undefeated
By Pathways

Black History Month Special
Written by Kwame Alexander, illustrated by Kadir Nelson, published by Andersen Press
The Undefeated features an illustrated poem celebrating and commemorating great people and moments from Black History in America. From world-renowned athletes, scientists and political leaders to those who persevered through slavery and people who fell victim to vicious racially-motivated attacks, the book weaves a rich visual and poetic tapestry remembering Black History.
Written by Alexander to mark President Obama’s 2008 election victory, along with the birth of his second daughter, the book is a rousing reminder of how Black Americans achieved this crucial milestone. Although a lot has happened in the world since then, this book is as relevant today as it was twelve years ago, if not more.
Alexander’s words are complimented by illustrator Kadir Nelson’s evocative portraits, resulting in a book that is both beautiful and incredibly powerful. This book is a must-read for all, children and adults alike.
