Nicola UsborneDeputy Managing Director
Nicola Usborne is Deputy Managing Director of the UK’s leading specialist children’s publisher, Usborne Publishing (founded by Nicola’s father, Peter, in 1973). Previously, she worked as a Vice President at Scholastic, in New York, developing award-winning technology products to build literacy; the transmedia online game, book and collectible card property “The 39 Clues”, and magazines for the classroom. She was also a BAFTA-winning film producer. Nicola runs, with her father and brother, the Usborne Foundation, a family charity focussing on developing early literacy. The foundation has developed and funded ‘Teach Your Monster to Read’, an award-winning suite of literacy games, which have been played over 120 million times by worldwide users. Nicola has a BA from Oxford University in English Literature, a MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies, an MBA from the Open University and studied at London Business School.
Helen LeeSenior Designer
Helen Lee has been working as a designer at Usborne since 2000, and is proud to be part of the UK's leading specialist children's book publisher 19 years on. Over the years she has worked on many areas of the Usborne list from Poppy and Sam’s Farmyard Tales books, to encyclopedias, sparkly touchy-feely jigsaw books, novelty books, historical fashion sticker books, cookbooks and more. Since becoming a Managing Designer, Helen has focused on Usborne’s Look Inside and Pop-up ranges, making sure they look fresh, exciting and super-interesting for the child reader. Her day-to-day role also involves looking for new illustrators, sourcing the best fonts, exploring new series ideas, visiting fairs and exhibitions and enjoying being part of an ever expanding, exceedingly talented Usborne design team.
Anna HoworthDirector of Global Branding & UK Marketing
Usborne is one of the UK’s leading children’s book publishers. An independent, family business, Anna Howorth has been with the company for 15 years. She runs the UK marketing and publicity team and also oversees global branding, managing the way in which the Usborne brand is represented around the world both in English and through the publisher’s nine foreign language imprints. Working closely with marketers across the business, it is Anna’s role to ensure brand consistency in all territories. She also looks after internal communications and social media strategy.
Becky WalkerCommissioning Fiction Editor
Becky Walker read English Literature at Durham University, and is currently studying for an MA at Goldsmiths. After working as a children's bookseller, Becky joined Usborne in 2011. She was delighted to win the 2018 Branford Boase Award and loves working with such a talented bunch of authors and illustrators.
