Sophie Stericker

Creative Director

Since graduating from Camberwell School of Art a hundred years ago, Sophie has worked with many talented people in the world of Children’s publishing. Whether working with established or debut artists, she has always loved the collaborative creative process between illustrator and designer. Children are visually sophisticated and savvy, it’s a constant desire of hers to ensure their fast-moving, ever-changing world is reflected in all aspects of the books she works on.

Alison Padley

Group Art Director, Fiction & Enid Blyton

After a brief stint in advertising, Alison began her publishing career as a designer of adult fiction. However, she soon realised her true ambition and moved into children’s book publishing where she has worked for over 15 years. One of the best parts of her job is finding and developing new talent. She is passionate about children’s fiction because every project is different and fresh and exciting. She has worked on amazing books throughout her career, including designing The Hunger Games trilogy, Toto the Ninja Cat, a refresh of The Famous Five and Malory Towers covers, and most recently a breathtaking YA novel based on the brides of Dracula called The Deathless Girls.

Samuel Perrett

Senior Designer - Fiction

In his current role as Senior Designer for Hachette Children’s Group, he specialises in designing illustrated fiction. However, he has also worked on non-fiction, picture books and licensing. One of the best parts of his job is discovering new talent and then working with the artist to nurture and refine the passion, creativity and skill into stunning pieces of commercial art. His biggest joy is seeing exciting new worlds and brilliant new characters truly come to life, watching them leap from the page and captivate readers again and again.

Kimberley Faria

Senior Designer

As a Senior Designer at HCG, Kimberley works on baby and preschool titles for the Pat-a-Cake imprint. She loves finding innovative ways to engage curious young minds and she is always looking for unique illustrators to bring the books to life.

Paula Burgess

Group Art Director, Picture Books & Pat-a-Cake

Paula currently holds the position of Group Art Director for Pre-School and Picture Books at Hachette Children’s Group, predominantly working on the Orchard, Hodder and Pat-a-Cake imprints. Since starting out in the 90s, she has had the privilege of working with many established and well-loved illustrators, such as Lauren Child, Liz Pichon, Ross Collins, Nick Sharratt, Babette Cole and Britta Teckentrup, to name but a few – but she believes that nothing compares to the thrill of working with a new illustrator and helping them to explore their style and place in this very creative industry.

Jennifer Stephenson

Deputy Art Director, Picture books

Jennifer has had over 10 years’ experience of working in the publishing industry although her original background is in fine art. She loves collaborating with illustrators whether they are someone as established as Jim Field or a debut illustrator straight out of art college. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a project through from initial sketches to final artwork displayed in a bookshop. She always learns something different from each illustrator she works with and hopes they get something back from working with her too.
